Mika Hakkinen has revealed that he has decided to revert to left-foot
braking - the technique he used to win two Formula
One World Championships - in an attempt to put his
title bid back on track, according to this week's
Autosport.
Hakkinen has braked with his right foot since
returning to full-time competition in the DTM with
Mercedes, but braking issues at Hockenheim and
Oschersleben, which meant complete overhauls of the
brake system on both occasions, led him to
questioning his driving style.
In a pre-Brands Hatch test at EuroSpeedway
Lausitz, Hakkinen tried left-foot braking for the
first time in his Mercedes C Class and says he is
now more confident to push it to the limit.
"I've been struggling, to be honest," he
admitted. "I have not felt comfortable right-foot
braking but, because we use a manual gearbox, I have
been focusing on heel-and-toe and using the clutch
to change gear.
"After Oschersleben I decided I was going to
left-foot brake again, like I always did in Formula
One.
"I tried it when I first started testing the DTM
car, but since then things have developed and the
car can cope better with the demands of left-foot
braking.
"I now feel very comfortable and confident again
- I feel good in my office.
"It's a big, big, big change from a driving point
of view. It is increasing the quality of my feedback
for the team, because I am much more relaxed with my
driving. My lap times have been more consistent and
quicker."
